Bedgebury Lower School is located south of Hawkhurst. The building was originally constructed as the Lillesden Family Mansion in 1855, eventually becoming a school in the 1920s. The School Closed in the early 1990s and since then the building has deteriorated rapidly. The theft of lead from the roof has caused significant water damage. Around three years ago a fatality occurred when someone believed to be removing lead from the roof fell. This led to the building being heavily secured and preserved, however, recently the building is ‘open’ again and vandalism is prevalent.
