| Little information exists about this small underground site. It is believed it began its life as natural sand mine, which local's had excavated on an ad - hoc basis since the 17th century. During the Second World War the natural system of caves was adapted into a bomb shelter, reinforcing to the ceiling and the public steps can still be noted. After the war the system was bricked up and the relocating of a nearby road means that the site can only be accessed today via a manhole cover and shaft. |
