Hangman’s wood Dene hole is the name given to a collection of shafts within a wooded area known as Little Thurrock in Essex. Originally it is believed there would have been up to seventy shafts, today, only two shafts access the underground workings. The workings date across a long time period, with origins in the medieval period, however the site was worked up until much more recently.

To access this site we SRT'd the main sixty-foot shaft, located in the bottom of a steep depression. At the bottom numerous crawls and passageways connect with the remaining workings. The workings take a good few hours to view and afterwards we had to SRT up the rope to get out.
